# Persistent storage

> Understand application data retention, storage allowances and deletion.

Applications with an approved persistent-storage allocation use a fixed-size volume mounted at `/data`. Keep durable application files there rather than in the container's temporary filesystem.

## Capacity and lifecycle

Storage requires a compatible storage agent and enough customer and cluster capacity. The fixed-volume model supports one application replica. Do not assume several replicas can safely share the volume.

| Action | Effect on persistent data |
| - | - |
| Stop or restart | Retains the volume |
| Delete application | Retains data and its storage accounting |
| Purge retained storage | Permanently destroys the selected data |

Retained data continues to consume capacity. An authorized platform administrator reviews the separate purge action.

## Backups and availability

A retained volume is not a backup. This storage model does not by itself provide replication, automatic cross-node failover or a restore service. Confirm the backup and recovery arrangements for your application.

<Warning>Export data with an application-consistent procedure before a destructive change. Copying a database file while it is being written may not produce a usable backup.</Warning>
